ID-based Communication for Better Internet

Abstract

The ID-based communication is better than the current Internet’s location-based, i.e. IP address-based, communication in terms of supporting mobility, heterogeneous network-layer protocols, scalable routing, and security. This talk starts from giving an overview of the Internet limitations due to using IP addresses in the role of both IDs and locators, and discusses some proposals on introducing the ID/locator split concept into the Internet. The later part of the talk highlights on how the ID-based communication would be suitable for realizing Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine to Machine (M2M) communications, where trillion of devices will be connected through heterogeneous mobile networks that will vary in both networking and link technologies.
