PEARL: a NFV platform in the wild

Abstract

Built and deployed in a largely uncoordinated manner, middleboxes frequently turn into a tangle of dedicated "black boxes", that become a headache in terms of management. To avoid the pitfalls of dedicated hardware, NFV has been proposed. While NFV is promising, achieving high performance over a heterogeneous hardware platform is a major challenge. In this talk, I will briefly introduce a practical and efficient NFV platform, PEARL, that is built in ICT, CAS. I will discuss the system design of PEARL as well as both system and algorithmic challenges we meet and our solutions to them. This platform is currently deployed in the context of China Future Internet infrastructure: CENI
