Day 1: Wireless Internet

Instructors: Dr Apinun Tunpan and Khandakar Rashedul Arefin

  • Introduction to Wireless Network Technology
  • Introduction to Ad Hoc Networks and Wireless Mesh Networks
  • Setup and experiments

DAY 2: Familiar yourself with VoIP

  • Use existing softswitch at fwd.pulver.com, www.voiprakyat.or.id
  • Use softphone, e.g. x-lite, sjphone, ekiga
  • Knows VoIP services, such as, www.voipcheap.com
  • Map your PSTN / cell number to VoIP at www.e164.org
  • Install ISO-based softswitch, e.g., asterisknow, trixbox, briker

DAY 3: Install & Operate your own Softswitch

  • Compile asterisk from scratch in Ubuntu Linux
  • Install openser or opensips
  • Integrate Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA) to the system
  • Integrate fix wireless terminal to VoIP
  • Integrate WiFi phone to the system
  • Call to PSTN & Cellullar

DAY 4: Advanced Topics

  • Install OpenSER or OpenSIPS
  • Howto test softswitch performance
  • DNS & ENUM installation & configuration
  • Configure Softswitch to use ENUM
  • Call to different softswitches using ENUM
  • Configure ATA to use ENUM
  • Call to PSTN / Cellular with OpenSIPS and ENUM

All participants will be able to play with gadgets during the hands-on workshop.

Biography of instructor

Dr. Apinun Tunpan - received his Ph.D. and M.S. in computer science from the University of Maryland College Park, USA, in 2002 and 1997 respectively. In 1993, He received a B.Eng. (Computer Engineering) from Chulalongkorn University, Thailand. Since his Ph.D. graduation, he has had more than 5 years in the telecommunication industry and private sector in Thailand. He is now a Senior Research Specialist at the Internet Education and Research Lab (intERLab), Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). His research interests include hybrid networks, wireless mesh networks, multimedia communications, and information retrieval. He also focuses on technology for disaster emergency communications.


Dr. Onno Purbo - withdrawn from Indonesian civil servant & retired lecturer, a maverick driven by a plain & simple vision to see an Indonesian knowledge based society, has been committing his time to write thousands articles, papers and 40+ books on Internet technology mostly in Indonesian language in attempting to educate the Indonesian on IT. In the process, he received several awards, including Sabattical Award from International Development Research Center (IDRC) in Canada. In the attempt, several alternative Internet technologies have been introduced and adopted by the Indonesian IT communities, such as, WiFi based Internet Infrastructure and VoIP MaverickNet. Retired Lecturer from Institute of Technology Bandung (ITB) & Retired Indonesian Civil Servent. He is an Eisenhower Fellow & Ashoka Senior Fellow. In the last 20 years, dedicate his time to educate Indonesians on Information technology, open source , Internet Telephony & Low Cost "Wireless" Internet Access.
He has published 40+ books & thousands of articles in IT. He is active in 170+ mailing lists and moderate 10+ mailing lists. His vision is "To See Knowledge Based Society in Indonesia".
